A few years ago, almost nobody asked where their timber actually came from. Now it’s coming up constantly, in client briefs, in green building requirements, in conversations with developers who want proof, not just a nice word like “eco-friendly” on a spec sheet.

So what does sustainable wood actually mean, and how do you know if what you’re buying really is?

Let’s start with the basics. Sustainable wood comes from forests that are managed to stay healthy long-term, protecting biodiversity and the communities that depend on that land, not just replanted after cutting and called a day. But here’s the thing, none of that means anything without proof. Anyone can say their wood is sustainably sourced. Certification is what actually backs that claim up.

That’s where FSC comes in. The Forest Stewardship Council certifies that timber has been harvested from responsibly managed forests, and just as importantly, that it’s been tracked through every single stage after that, from the forest to the mill to the supplier to your project. That tracking is called chain of custody, and it’s actually the part that matters most. A forest can be perfectly managed, but if the material passes through even one uncertified supplier along the way, the chain breaks and the claim doesn’t hold up anymore.

So when you see an FSC label, it’s not just a logo. It means that specific piece of timber can be traced all the way back to where it came from.

Why does this actually matter for a project in Dubai? A few reasons. Green building standards like LEED and Estidama increasingly reward, or outright require, certified materials, so specifying uncertified timber can genuinely cost you points on certification. And separately from compliance, a lot of international clients and developers working here now expect responsible sourcing as standard, not as a bonus. Being able to answer that question with documentation, not just an assurance, is becoming a real differentiator.

Here’s the part most people skip: actually checking. Don’t just take a supplier’s word for it. Ask for the FSC certificate number and check it against the FSC’s public database yourself. A genuinely certified supplier will hand you certificates for the actual products you’re buying, not a vague statement about their sourcing values. If a supplier gets uncomfortable when you ask for the number, that tells you something.

Certification aside, real due diligence goes a bit further too, knowing where the raw material originated, understanding the supplier’s relationships with mills and forests, and steering clear of anything linked to illegal logging. A supplier who actually knows this stuff will talk you through it without hesitating. One who doesn’t will change the subject.

None of this means sustainable sourcing has to slow your project down or blow your budget. It just means working with a supplier who’s already done the homework, and can prove it when you or your client asks.
